Having won the Best Male Actor award at the 56th National Films Awards in 2010, Upendra Limaye became the first Marathi actor to be honoured with the award in the awards show's history. Apart from the film ‘Jogwa’, for which he won this prestigious award, Upendra also appeared in several National award-winning films, like ‘Mukta,’ ‘Bangarwadi,’ ‘Sarkarnama,’ ‘Dhyasparva’, ‘Chandni Bar,’ ‘Page 3,’ & ‘Traffic Signal ’. He has been the favourite of Bollywood film maker Madhur Bhandarkar. At the same time, he continues to remain favourite of other Marathi, Hindi and South Indian filmmakers.
Zeetalkies met Upendra during the first look of his forthcoming Marathi film, ‘Bhagirath Sarpanch’. “I have always given priority to social and rural based subjects and I am satisfied with my progress,” he said while speaking about his priorities. “Yes, sometimes, I did opt for commercial films, due to personal relations with filmmakers. But, I have always supported a good subject as it is the spine of the film,” he added.
Speaking about his role in ‘Bhagirath Sarpanch’, he said, “Actually, when Nana(Mr. Ramdas Phutane), came with this offer, I didn’t even ask any details, as I was sure that he will be presenting a good rural subject. And, I really enjoyed playing this lead character.”
Upendra has two more Marathi projects in the pipeline and he is playing an important role in ‘Yashraj Films’ forthcoming film ‘Bank Chor’ with Riteish Deshmukh in the lead. For him, “Sincerity always counts, though it may not always bring immediate benefit. Because sincere efforts are never wasted.”
