Popular Marathi actor Subodh Bhave is making his debut as a director through forthcoming much talked about film ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’, which will release during Diwali. There was a lot of curiosity to know, how Subodh has presented the cinematic form of this old classical Marathi drama of the same name. But when the first look of this film was unveiled on Friday, it became clear that this talented actor has the potential of becoming a director to reckon with in the days to come.
The beautiful set design which was reminiscent of the traditional music gharanas during the olden days, perfect sound design, and mesmerizing classical songs; all seemed to be the USP of this film.
“Three and a half years ago on the sets of another film, Nitin Phadtare asked me, “what next?” I quickly said that I had a plan in my mind to make a cinematic version of the play ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’. He quickly agreed to be the producer. Both of us had not thought about the budget and when he asked me, I causally said that it would be somewhere around one crore rupees. But when we became serious about the project and decided to work on its music first, we had a meeting with Bollywood’s renowned scriptwriter Prakash Kapadia. We asked him to write the screenplay and dialogues of this film, based on the original story of Purushottam Darvhekar. When Prakashji showed us his first draft, we realized that our budget would touch a very big figure. Besides Nitin, two-three producers came forward but later backed out. Nitin stood firm, and we received a helping hand from Essel Vision about two and a half years ago and then began the actual work of this film” explained Subodh.
When asked about the selection of Shankar Mahadevan, Subodh made it very clear that he was looking for a character that would look realistic while singing a classical song and not an actor to act with lip movement. ”I could think of no one else other than Shankar Mahadevan, as I used to meet him very often during the music meetings of this film. The natural expressions in his eyes and his genuinely helping nature were very close to what I was looking for in the character of Panditji. I was very confident that I would be able to get the best out of him, as he had to work only on his dialogues while conversing with others. He fulfilled all my requirements during the shooting of this film,’ said Subodh.
Subodh was very clear about the cinematic presentation.”Please don’t mistake this as a remake of the play. Though the story of this film is based on this play and characters, we have developed it to take cinematic liberties. You will find every character important in this film, making his or her presence felt. Really appreciate the hard work put in by all the artistes, to give a realistic look. But more than that, I would call it a great team effort. Each and every person in the team, besides the artistes, has given their best. In fact, this being my debut film as a director, I had requested all my friends to help me and they all came to help me. So I would call it a combined effort,” he concluded.
