Makarand Deshpande is a vibrant character in the Marathi film industry. When we met Makarand recently, we spoke about the variety of characters played by him so far. “Yes, I am aware of it. Be it Hindi or a Marathi film, no one approaches me for an ordinary type of role. Therefore, whenever I am approached with such different characters, I accept such offers with a challenge. There is no tension while performing. In fact, I enjoy playing such roles with responsibility.”
Makarand is now playing a role which is similar to Arun Gavali alias Daddy, in the forthcoming Marathi film ‘Dagadi Chaawl’, directed by Chandrakant Kanse. “Frankly speaking, I always wanted to play this type of character for a long time. Therefore, when this offer came to me, I immediately agreed as I was thrilled. Some roles exactly suit my personality. Veerappan and Arun Gavli are a few such names. When the promotion of ‘Dagadi Chaawl’ began, it received overwhelming response. Now people are curious to see this film,”
When asked as to how he prepared himself for this role and whether he met Arun Gavali personally, Makarand said, “No, I haven’t met Mr. Gavali yet. But if I am able to meet him in the near future, it will be a pleasure. Actually, I saw video clippings of his three to four speeches, which helped me to understand his speaking style and body language. This is how I developed my role. This film is just not about him, it is about a strong character resembling him. The story is a work of fiction. How the fictional part has matched with some real life incidents, it is for audience to understand,” he concluded.
