The trailer of 'Baji' had created a huge buzz with the action sequences, two dance songs and powerful dialogues. The film promises all these along with the versatile role played by Shreyas Talpade. Many of the sequences of the film have been seen in many big Hindi movies which may act as a dampener on the otherwise technically great film. Shreyas has made a grand comeback to Marathi films as a hero with 'Baji' after his stint as a hit producer with 'Poshter Boyz'. Amruta Khanvilkar, sans any makeup, wins the hearts of the audience, while Jitendra Joshi as the villian leaves his indelible mark in the film. The songs are good, especially the hot item number by Shruti Marathe, adds to the charm of the film.
The story of 'Baji' revolves around this title character, who has been appearing in the village since time immemorial, to save the poor villagers whenever there is injustice done to them. 'Baji' appears even in this present times as a savior to save the afflicted. The truth is that the legacy of 'Baji' is passed on from one generation to other. This secret is hidden by Dipu’s mother (Ila Bhate) from Dipu (Shreyas Talpade). However, Dipu’s girlfriend Gauri(Amruta Khanvilakr) is still in awe of the adventures of 'Baji', as she was once saved by him when she was a little girl. However, Dipu’s friend from the village Martand (Jitendra Joshi) turns a bad man with passage of time.
When Dipu comes to know that he belongs to the family of 'Baji', he tries to stop Martand from committing a serious crime. In the process, he is beaten up by Martand. In the post interval session, we notice a drastic change in Dipu, who stands by the villagers against injustice done on them by Martand. So, it is a fight of Good versus evil. The director has generated enough anxiety in the screenplay while depicting this eternal fight. However, had there been speed in the pace of the screenplay, it would have created a better impact. However, full credit goes to the producers and the director of 'Baji' for the action packed climax, cleverly shot on the goods train.
Two songs in this film have been picturised very well. The first song shot in the fair, has showcased the dancing skills of Shreyas, while the second song, which is an item song, presents Shruti Marathe in her best form. Her beauty, combined with her graceful yet sensual dancing skills leaves the audience wanting for more.
All in all, 'Baji' scores full marks on technical grounds, although much more was expected from this film. Nikhil Mahajan's ability with Shreyas Talpade's star powers adds to the value of the film. At the end of the film, the director gives a hint that a sequel to 'Baji' will be made. That we will have to wait for!
