Legend has it that Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj, also known as Akkalkot Swami Maharaj, left his physical embodiment in 1878. In places like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh there are a lot of followers of Swami, who is treated like God. The latest released film ‘Deool Band’ talks about faith of his devotees in Swami and his teachings.
The film is set against the backdrop of a big housing society in Pune, which also houses a temple of this Swami, with its residents regularly performing pooja.
A top Indian scientist from the USA is invited by ISRO to India, to inspect safety measures on the sea route and suggest quick warning signals about trespassing by terrorist groups. For security reasons, he is shifted to Pune instead of Mumbai, on the advice of PMO. The young scientist Raghav Shastri (Gashmeer Mahajani), who is an atheist, arrives with his wife (Girija Joshi) and their five-year-old daughter Sana. He is given a comfortable, spacious flat for his experiment and study. But the noise of frequent prayers in the temple disturbs Raghav Shastri and he dares to go and stop their practice.
The film shows Raghav’s journey, of doing something for the country’s defence, his tryst with religion and the testing of his beliefs. The film talks about science and its relation to spirituality. There are various references used in the film, to convince the scientist about the existence of God. What is interesting about this film is its engaging screenplay, which has succeeded in holding the audience to their seats from start to finish. The symbol of Swami (Mohan Joshi), arriving at the stroke of interval of the film has been cleverly used by the film maker. Till the end of the film, it is the character played by versatile actor Mohan Joshi, which entertains the audience with his acts and timely advice.
Gashmeer Mahajani, who has just made his debut last week in Marathi films, is highly impressive in the role of Raghav Shastri. He possesses a very good personality and has a very good voice, which he delivers with finesse. Girija Joshi also fits her role effortlessly as his wife. Good support comes from artistes like Nivedita Saraf, Shweta Shinde, Satish Alekar, Kiran Yadnyopavit, Sharvari Jamenis, Sunil Abhyankar, Pravin Tarde, Snehal Tarde and others. There are many popular artistes in guest appearances. Wonderful photography by Prashant Misale, suitable music by Narendra Bhide, Rohit Nagbhide and clever direction by Pravin Tarde and Pranit Kulkarni are the other plus points of this film.
