Previously, many films based on underworld gangsters have been made in Hindi cinema, like Mumbai Gangwar, Satya and Company. But Marathi film makers have never tried to get into this genre, till Dagadi Chawl was made recently. And it achieved good success overall. Now Udaydada Lad and director Sushrut Bhagwat have presented one such film Mumbai Time- A Revenge Story which is also a story of an educated middle class youth, who turns a gangster due to a mishap. The story is set on the backdrop of Gangwar in 80s, spread in the areas of Lalbaug, Wadala and Sewree.
Amar Surve (Umesh kamat) is an educated child but he is the son of a Gangster turned bar owner Bhargav Surve(Sanjay Mone). Knowing the past of his father, Amar is denied a good job. His mother (Ashwini Ekbote) is worried about her son’s future. One day, Amar goes along with his friend Dilip Bhavsar to help him. But he encounters a goon Ravdya (Kishore Chougule), who belongs to Anna’s (Dipak Shirke) gang. When Amar beats up Ravdya, he escapes from there and surrenders before police. But to take revenge, Ravdya attacks Amar’s parents and kills them on the spot. Thereafter, we see Amar joining Anna’s rival’s Khan (Ramesh Bhatkar) gang and starts finishing his men, one by one, using his intelligence. And that’s how the Gangwar begins. In this process, his girlfriend (Mrunal Dusanis) remains loyal to him.
Director Sushrut Bhawat seems to have worked hard on the screenplay, so as to make it interesting. He has successfully managed to create that atmosphere of 80s in Mumbai. But we have many such happenings shown in this film, in the films like ‘Vastav’ & ‘Hathyar’. Actually, the screenplay develops through use of interesting dialogues. Umesh kamat has played the middle class studious young boy, drawn towards gang wars very efficiently. Among the other artistes, Ramesh Bhatkar, Sanjay Mone, Ashwini Ekbote, Dipak Shirke, Rahul Mehendale, Kishore Chougule & Mrunal Dusanis have played their characters convincingly.Though Mahesh Manjrekar has played a Senior duty bound Police Officer, he plays it really well. Sara Shravan has presented one graceful dance. All in all, the director has tried his best to include all entertaining aspects into this crime based film.
