A modern day stylish grandfather (Ravindra Mankani), who drives an old model well maintained Jeep, takes his ‘video games’ savvy grandson (Shubhankar Atre) for outing. He diverts his route towards his village, making his grandson aware of the beauty of the nature. While explaining the local game of ‘Viti Dandu’ to his grandson, the grandfather goes down the memory lane and narrates his grandson a real story of a grandfather (Dilip Prabhavalkar) and his beloved grandson Govind (Nishant Bhavsar)
Set on the backdrop of a remote village, the story revolves around a grandfather who is very protective about his grandson. Though all the villagers, comprising of Hindu & Muslim population, are against the British rulers, the Grandpa urges his grandson to respect and salute the British officer posted to their village. The actual trouble begins when a new British Commander Koufner arrives in their village. Grandpa is shocked to see him as he is the one who had shot dead his son and daughter-in-law, in the freedom movement sometime back.
A small sharpened wooden object hit with a handy stick in the game of ‘Vitti Dandu’ plays the trick in the unusual story of this film, written by creative director Vikas Kadam. Director Ganesh Kadam has skillfully presented every scene with utmost care, to recreate the pre-independence atmosphere in the film. The music of this film composed by Santosh Mulekar and the fine photography of Shailesh Awasthi add to the icing on the cake.
Looking at the performances of the artists, veteran Dilip Prabhavalkar stands tall with his wonderful performance as he looks natural in that role of a grandfather. Good support comes from Mrunal Thakur, who plays the tamasha dancer, an important character in this film. In other supporting roles Yatin Karyekar is impressive, in the company of Vikas Kadam, Ashok Samarth, Uday Deshmukh, Gohar Khan and Radhika Devre.
All in all, ‘Vitti Dandu’ produced by Leena Deore and presented by Ajay Devgn offers a realistic patriotic subject very skillfully, which will surely impress today’s new Marathi audience with the refined tastes.
